Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City Hands-On
Zombies are back?! What?! Get the f#$k out! I know right! When this game was first brought to light I couldn’t believe they finally gave us our zombies back. I’ve been craving this for years now and I will be the first to say that I am not disappointed with the product thus far. I had the chance to sink my teeth (Ha, get it?) into this highly anticipated zombie shooter and what I found… Well, you’ll just have to keep reading than huh?
The demo starts off with the famous zombie truck driver cinematic from Resident Evil 2. Oh you don’t know? Here let me refresh your memory, give this a look-see
After you’ve seen that nifty little cutscene with updated visuals you’re given different tasks which you must complete within the allotted time or it’s game over man. This is not your typical point-and-shoot type Resident Evil experience, this more of a run-and-gun type deal. Now that’s out of the way, let’s move on. Each area brought different enemies which scaled the difficulty quite effectively. You start with your zombies of course, we then move onto Lickers, followed by Hunters as well as the special task forces trying to stop you. When they’re all thrown together on one battleground it is pure insanity; the adrenaline fueled fun kind to be precise.
Let me start off by saying this game is EXTREMELY team based and I cannot stress this enough! There isn’t any lone ranger, one-man army, “Hey look I bet I can get through the map faster than my friends” type deal going on here. Between the four of you stands an army of the undead plus squads of special task forces dropped around the already hectic, nerve racking areas. That being said, each member of your squad has their own unique special ability that will most definitely come in handy in particular situations.
These squad members being:
- Vector – Master of stealth
- Bertha – Team medic
- Beltway – Explosives expert
- Spectre- Designated marksman
- Lupo- Team leader and a USS Commander.
- Four Eyes- A USS Field scientist.
After you’ve decided what character you want to use you can select the weapon you’d like to destroy zombie brains with ranging from assault rifles, sub machine guns and of course your fan favorite, shotguns. In the demo you were able to select one of two special abilities; Four Eyes for example could use either a type of pheromone grenade that attracted the infected or a special gun used to control a B.O.W that forces it to attack its somewhat former allies. Lupo was the first character I decided to use to wreak havoc on the walking dead, you might say “Well you only selected her because one of her special abilities is to have unlimited ammo for a short period of time.” No.. You… Shut up.. While playing as Lupo I experienced first hand what it was like to use a zombie as a meat shield.. Let me break that down. Zombie. Meat. Shield. I literally can’t think of anything cooler than that.
After a certain number of zombie interactions you will become infected. I’m not talking about Michael Jackson Thriller zombie dance infected either, I mean infected as in you should probably have your teammates shoot you before you’re soon part of the undead legion skulking around for their brains. If you do become a z-word you completely lose control of your character and are given a respawn time in which you can jump right back into the action, that is unless you shot by a special task member. Which leads me to the another cool feature, if this happens you will be notified that you are bleeding. This means more than likely the zombies in the area will hunger for you specifically and will be sent into a sort of blood rage if you will and begin running after you until you are all patched up. However you can use this feature against the task forces as well, shoot them, they will bleed, zombies will eat them. Cut. Done. That’s a wrap.
Saying I’d like this game now is clearly and understatement. I will most definitely be at the nearest midnight release fighting my own hordes of fellow Resident Evil… enthusiasts if you will. If you just so happened to skip to the bottom of this it seems as if you’re in luck because below is the entire Comic-Con 2011 demo for you to view yourself. Enjoy.
